Chronic bronchitis in oil industry workers exposed to hydrocarbons: role of cigarette smoking and gender differences

چکیده
Materials and methods A retrospective case-control study was performed. Industry workers from an oil refinery were monitored for a 6yrs period. The air levels of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons were monitored. During this period, all workers received regular clinical examinations, which included evaluation for smoking status, occupational exposure to hydrocarbons (aliphatic and aromatic), and the presence and severity of chronic bronchitis. The workers were divided into two groups of approximately 100 patients each: Group (1) males exposed to hydrocarbons; and Group (2) females exposed to hydrocarbons. Appropriately-matched control groups were also selected from non-exposed workers, who matched in age, gender, work history and lifestyle. The prevalence of smoking and chronic bronchitis was determined in each group. Linear regression analysis was used to assess the correlation between exposure to hydrocarbons and effects (chronic bronchitis), as well as smoking, and severity of chronic bronchitis.

Gender and respiratory findings in workers occupationally exposed to organic aerosols: A meta analysis of 12 cross-sectional studies
BACKGROUND Gender related differences in respiratory disease have been documented. The aim of this study was to investigate gender related differences in respiratory findings by occupation. We analyzed data from 12 of our previously published studies. METHODS Three thousand and eleven (3011) workers employed in "organic dust" industries (1379 female and 1632 male) were studied. A control grou...
متن کاملAssessing the Effect of Simultaneous Exposure to Noise and Cigarette Smoke on Workers’ Blood Pressure
Introduction: Noise, as the most common pollutant in the industrial environment, can lead to hearing loss and negatively affect other organs such as the cardiovascular system. Cigarette smoking is a popular habit among some workers, and can also have a negative effect on the cardiovascular system. This study aimed to investigate the effect of simultaneous exposure to noise and cigarette smoke o...
متن کاملRelationship between Smoking and Hearing Impairment of Automotive Industry Workers Exposed to Noise
Introduction: Working in noisy environments may cause hearing loss. Studies have shown that some factors along with noise are independently involved in hearing loss, one of which is cigarette smoking. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of smoking on hearing loss in workers exposed to occupational noise. Materials and Methods: The workers’ hearing loss was measured through a tona...
